Geraldine R.
Dodge Foundation grant to visit and photograph literary settings in England,
France,
and Ireland. I use these photos regularly in my teaching.
I have been teaching at Mendham High School for 37 years. In that time I have taught all levels of French and English, and now teach just English. For many years I was the advisor to our original school newspaper, "The Pipeline." I created our first school web site in 1997, and subsequently served as the webmaster for 10 years. For the last several years I have been the advisor to our chapter of the National Honor Society.
In the 1980's and 1990's, I taught literature and writing courses in the Department of English and Comparative Literature at Montclair State University. I am an Eagle Scout, with Bronze Palm. I was a member of Troop 86 in Newton for many years, finishing my career in Scouting as the Scoutmaster.
These images represent some of my "favorite stuff."

NOTE: Beginning with the 2009 - 2010 school
year, selection procedures have changed. Juniors are not eligible to apply
until
September of their senior year. Please see me for more information.
I am the advisor to our chapter of the National Honor Society, which was founded in 1921 in Pittsburgh, PA. to recognize high school students for their academic achievement and contributions to their school. We have had a continuous chapter at Mendham since 1971. (I still have the original charter in my classroom!)
Juniors and seniors in good academic standing are invited to apply for membership annually. The application dates are announced on the school home page and in the daily bulletin. Each year we hold a winter clothing drive to benefit Market Street Mission in Morristown. This has become an annual tradition, and all members of the N.H.S. are expected to participate in this community service project. Please contact me if you have any questions about the National Honor Society at Mendham High School
These two orange doors were the front doors back
in 1985, when this photo was taken. All exterior doors back then were
orange, and all student lockers inside were painted the same orange, the
original color from 1970.
Today, the
location of these doors is the brick archway we pass through as we enter the lobby
today,
just
in from the elevator. On the lower left, the area with the air conditioner is
today in the middle of the guidance office.
The orange door on the extreme, lower left led into the stairwell which still
goes upstairs to the math side. The window on
the upper left has been replaced by the door to the hallway which goes up to the library area. On the right, that was a
conference room which is now the principal's office. The white box on the
wall to the left of the doors was a pay phone back then....many years before
cell phones! All of this is now below the "clock tower"
and the library, which was opened in 1992.
The photographer who took this
picture was standing
up on the mound. Please read on......

When the school opened in 1970, the
circle had a huge mound of dirt in the center of it, left over
from the construction job which had just been completed. Grass and trees
were planted on the
mound, and the flag pole was put there as well. The mound, which was a
popular spot for yearbook photos over the years,
remained there until 2005, when it was removed to level the ground for the
construction
of the Julius Wargacki Memorial Fountain. Julius Wargacki was one of our math teachers
who later became
our 5th principal. He passed away in December of 2003.
Are you a
graduate of Mendham? Every year I look for an alumni guest speaker for
our
induction ceremony for the National Honor Society, of which I am the
advisor. If you are
available to speak briefly during our annual induction, I would appreciate
hearing from you.
Please get in touch with me at your
convenience.
